Objective: In recent years, faced with a complex economic development environment and the evolving dynamics of the Chinese workplace, talent has become a precious resource that is invaluable yet scarce for every enterprise. As Generation Z employees have gradually entered the labor market, they contribute new perspectives and energies to various enterprises and pose unique challenges. The traditional step-by-step approach no longer meets the needs of today's businesses. Companies require more proactive talents to drive superior performance. Individuals with proactive behavior can effectively plan their career paths and are better equipped to fulfill core organizational tasks. Therefore, it is crucial for organizations to effectively mitigate the perceived negative impacts of proactive behavior, encouraging individuals to exhibit more positive proactive actions. Methods: Based on the proactive motivation model, this study investigates the effects of mentoring, balanced psychological contract, proactive behavior, and agreeableness on the proactive behaviors of new employees. The research surveyed 417 new employees from Guangdong Province, China, who had graduated within the last three years, with a gender distribution of 49.4% male and 50.6% female. Results: Structural Equation Modeling was used for data analysis, and the following results were obtained: First, mentoring positively affected the balanced psychological contract and new employees' proactive behavior. Second, mentoring positively affected the new employees' proactive behavior through the balanced psychological contract. Third, agreeableness played a moderating role in the relationship between mentoring and new employees' proactive behavior, and in the relationship between mentoring and the balanced psychological contracts. Finally, the positive indirect effect of mentoring through the balanced psychological contract on new employees' proactive behavior is positively moderated by agreeableness. Conclusion: The results of this study offer new insights into mentoring research for new employees and provide practical guidance for fostering the balanced psychological contract and proactive behavior among new employees. This research enriches the existing literature on mentoring for new employees by demonstrating the integral roles of agreeableness and a balanced psychological contract in fostering proactive behavior, offering valuable insights for organizational practices aimed at enhancing employee proactivity.

Using appropriate zooplankton to transfer the primary productivity of harmful algae to higher trophic levels through food chain is an eco-friendly mode to remove harmful algae. To assess the top-down efficiency of rotifer removing Phaeocystis and the salinity effect, we adopted a series of salinities to carry out Phaeocystis-rotifer population dynamics and rotifer life-history experiments. Results showed that the time for rotifers to remove Phaeocystis population was the shortest when the salinity was ≤20 ‰. With salinity rising to above 25 ‰, although the clearance time of Phaeocystis population by rotifer was significantly prolonged, ultimately the Phaeocystis population were almost completely eliminated at all salinities. Additionally, rotifer matured and reproduced earlier at low salinity, while high salinity significantly delayed first reproductive time and decreased the total offspring. The above findings are helpful to assess the impacts of external environmental factors on the application of zooplankton to control harmful algae.

BACKGROUND: The incidence rate of malignant tumors after solid organ transplantation is higher than the normal population. The aim of our study is to identify the risk of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) after liver, kidney, heart and lung transplantation, respectively, and suggest that transplant patients can be screened early for tumors to avoid risk. METHODS: PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library from their inception until August 16,2023. Retrospective and cohort studies which focus on the statistical data of standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) of RCC after solid organ transplantation (SOT) more than one year have been included and extracted. The study was registered with PROSPERO, CRD4202022343633. RESULTS: Sixteen original studies have been included for meta-analysis. Liver transplantation could increase the risk of RCC (SIR = 0.73, 95%CI: 0.53 to 0.93) with no heterogeneity(P = 0.594, I2 = 0.0%). And kidney transplantation could increase the risk of RCC(8.54, 6.68 to 10.40; 0.000,90.0%). Besides, heart and lung transplantation also could increase the risk of RCC(SIR = 0.73, 95%CI: 0.53 to 0.93; SIR = 1.61, 95%CI:0.50 to 2.71). Moreover, significance could also be found in most subgroups, especially the European group and retrospective study group. What's more, after removing studies which have a greater impact on the overall outcome in RCC rate after kidney transplantation, heterogeneity did not solve and significant different was also observed in the European group (7.15, 5.49 to 8.81; 0.000, 78.6%). CONCLUSION: Liver, kidney, heart and lung transplantation patients have an increased risk of processing RCC compared to the general population and most subgroups, especially in geographic location of European subgroup, which suggested that patients should be screened frequently after transplantation.

Super-hydrophilic and oleophobic functional materials can prevent pollution or adsorption by repelling oil, and have good circulation. However, traditional strategies for preparing these functional materials either use expensive fabrication machines or contain possibly toxic organic polymers, which may prohibit the practical application. The research of multifunctional ZnO microstructures or nanoarrays thin films with super-hydrophilic, antifouling, and antibacterial properties has not been reported yet. Moreover, the exploration of underwater oleophobic and self-cleaning antifouling properties in ZnO micro/nanostructures is still in its infancy. Here, we prepared ZnO microstructured films on fluorine-doped tin oxide substrates (F-ZMF) for the development of advanced self-cleaning type super-hydrophilic and oleophobic materials. With the increase of the accelerators, the average size of the F-ZMF microstructures decreased. The F-ZMF shows excellent self-cleaning performance and hydrophilic (water contact angle ≤ 10°) and oleophobic characteristics in the underwater antifouling experiment. Under a dark condition, F-ZMF-4 showed good antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) with inhibition rates of 99.1% and 99.9%, respectively. This study broadens the application scope of ZnO-based material and provides a novel prospect for the development of self-cleaning super-hydrophilic and oleophobic materials.

Certain dietary and physical activity (PA) behaviors may differentially predispose male and female adolescents to obesity and diabetes; however, sex differences in dietary and PA behaviors and in factors that impact these behaviors (e.g., self-efficacy, social support) in this population remain unknown. Using data from a community-based adolescent diabetes prevention intervention conducted in East Harlem in New York City, we examined sex differences in baseline characteristics including clinical measurements, lifestyle behaviors, and behavioral determinants. Among 147 overweight/obese adolescents aged 13-19 years, 61.9% were girls, 69.7% were of Hispanic ethnicity, 24.8% were non-Hispanic Black, and 60.5% were diagnosed with prediabetes. Boys had higher metabolic risk scores than girls (3.8 vs. 3.3, p = 0.002) despite girls reporting more perceived barriers to healthy eating and PA. Boys reported doing more moderate to vigorous PA but also had more sedentary behaviors than girls. Boys reported higher self-efficacy and more peer support for PA. Girls reported more depressive symptoms and were more likely to compare their body images to those in magazines/social media. Overall, among a sample of urban adolescents with high metabolic risk, we found significant sex differences in many dietary and PA behaviors and related factors, which could be used to inform tailored strategies for weight management to reduce cardiometabolic risk among youth from similar high-risk populations.

Importance: Cancer survivors are at a higher risk of developing hearing loss (HL) due to older age, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. However, the prevalence of HL among US cancer survivors remains unknown. Additionally, there is a lack of uniform HL screening guidelines for this enlarging population. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of subjective HL and objective HL by audiometry test among cancer survivors and compare them with the general population as well as to assess the performance of subjective HL questions in detecting true (ie, audiometry-confirmed) HL. Design, Setting, and Participants: In a cross-sectional design, adults between ages 20 and 80 years who had audiometry testing and responded to a hearing questionnaire from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011-2012, 2015-2016, and 2017 to March 2020 prepandemic survey cycles) were selected. Data analysis was conducted from August 13, 2022, to July 26, 2023. Main Outcomes and Measures: The weighted prevalence of subjective HL (troublesome hearing and tinnitus) and objective HL (speech-frequency HL and high-frequency HL) by audiometry were calculated. Analyses with χ2 testing and multiadjusted logistic regression models were used to compare HL between cancer survivors and the general population. To evaluate the performance of subjective HL questions as a tool to screen for objective HL by audiometry, areas under the curve were estimated using age- and gender-adjusted logistic regression. Results: Among the total 9337 participants (weighted n = 90 098 441; 51.2% women), 10.3% were cancer survivors. Compared with the general population, cancer survivors had a higher prevalence of troublesome hearing (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 1.43; 95% CI, 1.11-1.84), tinnitus (AOR, 1.28; 95% CI, 0.94-1.74), speech-frequency HL (AOR, 1.43; 95% CI, 1.11-1.85), and high-frequency HL (AOR, 1.74; 95% CI, 1.29-2.34). When using the subjective HL tool and questioning regarding whether the participants were having troublesome hearing and/or tinnitus in screening for HL, the age- and gender-adjusted area under the curve was 0.88 in detecting speech-frequency HL and 0.90 in detecting high-frequency HL. Conclusion and Relevance: The findings of this study suggest that cancer survivors have a significantly higher prevalence of HL than the general population. Two subjective HL questions could potentially accurately identify those who have true HL and provide a simple and efficient screening tool for health care professionals. Cancer survivors and their families should be educated and encouraged to discuss hearing concerns, and health care professionals should facilitate raising awareness and provide early screening and timely referral when HL is identified.

BACKGROUND: Astrocytes play a vital role in offering functional support for neurons, which are related to the pathogenic mechanism of depression. Ginsenoside Rb1 (GRb1) is demonstrated with antidepressant-like activities. PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate whether GRb1 can inhibit mitophagy-mediated astrocytic pyroptosis to protect neurons in depression. STUDY DESIGN: Model rats were subjected to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) for determining the in vivo antidepressant activity of GRb1. METHODS: The mitophagy-mediated antipyroptosis role of GRb1 was assessed in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) + ATP-stimulated astrocytes. The mechanism by which GRb1 protects synaptic plasticity was investigated using hippocampal neurons incubated in an astrocyte medium. The rat depressive-like behaviors were determined through sucrose preference, forced swimming, and the open-field tests. Escitalopram was used in the anti-depression control of GRb1. Cyclosporin A (CsA), a mitophagy inhibitor, and interleukin (IL)-1ß were used to reverse the role of GRb1 in mitophagy and pyroptosis, respectively. RESULTS: GRb1 inhibited LPS-induced inflammation and activation in the astrocytes and repressed nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) pathway. Also, GRb1 repressed LPS + ATP-promoted astrocytic pyroptosis. During GRb1 treatment, the activation of mitophagy with a decrease in ROS was observed in LPS + ATPs-stimulated astrocytes. CsA enhanced GRb1-decreased ROS and promoted astrocytic pyroptosis. The GRb1-treated astrocyte medium suppressed neuron death and increased neuron viability and synaptic density. Escitalopram and GRb1 improved the depressive-like behaviors of the rats. GRb1 activated mitophagy and inhibited astrocytic activation and pyroptosis in rats with depression. It also reduced impairments in synaptic structures and increased synaptic density in depressive-like rats. IL-1ß increased astrocytic pyroptosis and reversed GRb1-enhanced synaptic plasticity in the rats exposed to CUMS. There were no statistical changes in depressive-like behaviors between GRb1 and Escitalopram groups. CONCLUSION: GRb1 modulates mitophagy and the NF-κB pathway to inhibit astrocytic pyroptosis, thereby maintaining neurological homeostasis by repressing inflammation and enhancing synaptic plasticity.

INTRODUCTION: Hospital staff discussing smoking with children and their families can impact tobacco control, which is crucial in reducing the harmful effects of tobacco smoke exposure. Our study aims to assess staff comfort level in discussing smoking with patients or their families, and coworkers, after the implementation of a hospital-wide tobacco control policy. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 2340 staff members who completed an anonymous online survey in a large urban children's hospital in 2019. The main outcomes of interest were the comfort level in discussing smoking with patients or their families, and co-workers. We used multivariable logistic regression to identify whether the comfort level varied by sex, age, job type, and smoking status. RESULTS: Most of the respondents (83.8%) were female, 41.2% were aged 18-35 years, 57.6% worked as clinical staff, and 15.5% were ever smokers. Compared to males, females were less likely to feel very comfortable in asking patients or their families about their smoking tobacco (adjusted odds ratio, AOR=0.72; 95% CI: 0.56-0.92) or talking to co-workers about the health risks associated with their smoking (AOR=0.71; 95% CI: 0.54-0.93). Staff who were non-smokers were less likely to feel very comfortable in talking to co-workers about the health risks associated with their smoking (AOR=0.60; 95% CI: 0.45-0.78). The odds of feeling very comfortable in discussing smoking were consistently lower among those aged 18-35 years than their older counterparts. Clinical staff were more likely than non-clinical staff to feel very comfortable in discussing with patients and their parents about smoking, but there was no difference when talking to co-workers. CONCLUSIONS: We found differences in staff comfort level in discussing smoking with patients or their families, and coworkers, by sex, age, job type, and smoking status. These results can guide training and identify potential barriers and improve tailored tobacco control training programs and policies for hospital staff.

(1) Background: High ambient temperatures are associated with increased morbidity and mortality rates, and some evidence suggests that high temperatures increase the risk of road crashes. However, little is known regarding the burden of road crashes attributable to no-optimal high temperatures in Australia. Therefore, this study examined the effects of high temperatures on road crashes using Adelaide in South Australia as a case study. (2) Methods: Ten-year daily time-series data on road crashes (n = 64,597) and weather during the warm season (October-March) were obtained between 2012 and 2021. A quasi-Poisson distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) was used to quantify the cumulative effect of high temperatures over the previous five days. The associations and attributable burden at moderate and extreme temperature ranges were computed as relative risk (RR) and attributable fraction. (3) Results: There was a J-shaped association between high ambient temperature and the risk of road crashes during the warm season in Adelaide, and pronounced effects were observed for minimum temperatures. The highest risk was observed at a 1 day lag and lasting for 5 days. High temperatures were responsible for 0.79% (95% CI: 0.15-1.33%) of road crashes, with moderately high temperatures accounting for most of the burden compared with extreme temperatures (0.55% vs. 0.32%). (4) Conclusions: In the face of a warming climate, the finding draws the attention of road transport, policy, and public health planners to design preventive plans to reduce the risk of road crashes attributable to high temperatures.

Plinabulin is a promising microtubule destabilizing agent in phase 3 clinical stage for treating non-small cell lung cancer. However, the high toxicity and the poor water solubility of plinabulin limited its use and more plinabulin derivatives need to be explored. Here, two series of 29 plinabulin derivatives were designed, synthesized and evaluated for their anti-tumor effect against three types of cancer cell lines. Most of derivatives exerted obvious inhibition to the proliferation of the cell lines tested. Among them, compound 11c exerted stronger efficiency than plinabulin, and the reason might be the additional hydrogen bond between the nitrogen atom of the indole ring in compound 11c and Gln134 of ß-tubulin. Immunofluorescence assay showed that compound 11c at 10 nM significantly disrupted tubulin structure. Compound 11c also significantly induced G2/M cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in dose dependent manner. These results suggest that compound 11c might be a potential candidate for cancer treatment as antimicrotubule agent.

Recent studies have revealed that the Kerivouladepressa complex should be divided into two species, K.depressa distributed mainly in Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, and K.dongduongana found only in the Annamite Mountains of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. In November 2018 and April 2019, 24 woolly bats were collected by two-band harp traps in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China. Based on morphological, morphometric, and phylogenetic (COI, Cytb, and RAG2 gene sequences) analyses, these bats were identified as K.depressa and K.dongduongana, representing two new species records for the country. Including the new records, six Kerivoula species have been recorded in China, namely K.depressa, K.dongduongana, K.furva, K.kachinensis, K.picta and K.titania. To facilitate their identification and biological research in the future, we have provided an up-to-date key to all Kerivoula species occurring in China.

Fungal spoilage of postharvest grains poses serious problems with respect to food safety, human health, and the economic value of grains. The protection of cereal grains from deleterious fungi is a critical aim in postharvest grain management. Considering the bulk volume of grain piles in warehouses or bins and food safety, fumigation with natural gaseous fungicides is a promising strategy to control fungal contamination on postharvest grains. Increasing research has focused on the antifungal properties of biogenic volatiles. This review summarizes the literature related to the effects of biogenic volatiles from microbes and plants on spoilage fungi on postharvest grains and highlights the underlying antifungal mechanisms. Key areas for additional research on fumigation with biogenic volatiles in postharvest grains are noted. The research described in this review supports the protective effects of biogenic volatiles against grain spoilage by fungi, providing a basis for their expanded application in the management of postharvest grains.

Introduction: There have been many researches done on the association between maternal exposure to ambient air pollution and adverse pregnancy outcomes, but few studies related to very low birth weight (VLBW). This study thus explores the association between maternal exposure to ambient air pollutants and the risk of VLBW, and estimates the sensitive exposure time window. Methods: A retrospective cohort study analyzed in Chongqing, China, during 2015-2020. The Generalized Additive Model were applied to estimate exposures for each participant during each trimester and the entire pregnancy period. Results: For each 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 during pregnancy, the relative risk of VLBW increased on the first trimester, with RR = 1.100 (95% CI: 1.012, 1.195) in the single-pollutant model. Similarly, for each 10 µg/m3 increase in PM10, there was a 12.9% (RR = 1.129, 95% CI: 1.055, 1.209) increase for VLBW on the first trimester in the single-pollutant model, and an 11.5% (RR = 1.115, 95% CI: 1.024, 1.213) increase in the multi-pollutant model, respectively. The first and second trimester exposures of NO2 were found to have statistically significant RR values for VLBW. The RR values on the first trimester were 1.131 (95% CI: 1.037, 1.233) and 1.112 (95% CI: 1.015, 1.218) in the single-pollutant model and multi-pollutant model, respectively; The RR values on the second trimester were 1.129 (95% CI: 1.027, 1.241) and 1.146 (95% CI: 1.038, 1.265) in the single-pollutant model and multi-pollutant model, respectively. The RR of O3 exposure for VLBW on the entire trimester was 1.076 (95% CI: 1.010-1.146), and on the second trimester was 1.078 (95% CI: 1:016, 1.144) in the single-pollutant model. Conclusion: This study indicates that maternal exposure to high levels of PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and O3 during pregnancy may increase the risk of very low birth weight, especially for exposure on the first and second trimester. Reducing the risk of early maternal exposure to ambient air pollution is thus necessary for pregnant women.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with hypertension have a risk of depression. Morinda officinalis oligosaccharides (MOOs) have anti-depressant properties. In this study, we aimed to determine whether MOOs can improve the symptoms of depression in individuals with hypertension. METHODS: Dahl salt-sensitive rats fed with a high-salt diet were stimulated by chronic unpredictable mild stress to mimic hypertension with depression. Primary astrocytes and neurons were isolated from these rats. Astrocytes underwent LPS stimulation to simulate the inflammatory astrocytes during depression. MOOs were administrated at 0.1 mg/g/day in vivo and 1.25, 2.5, and 5 mg/mL in vitro. Mitophagy was inhibited using 5 mM 3-methyladenine (3-MA). Astrocyte-mediated neurotoxicity was detected by co-culturing astrocytes and neurons. RESULTS: MOOs decreased systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, and mean arterial pressure, thereby improving depression-like behavior, including behavioral despair, lack of enthusiasm, and loss of pleasure during hypertension with depression. Furthermore, MOOs inhibited inflammation, astrocytic dysfunction, and mitochondrial damage in the brain. Then, MOOs promoted autophagosome and lysosome enriched in mitochondria in LPS-stimulated astrocytes. MOOs suppressed mitochondrial damage and the release of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1ß in astrocytes undergoing LPS stimulation. Importantly, MOOs rescued the impaired neurons co-cultured with astrocytes. The effects of MOOs on LPS-stimulated astrocytes were reversed by 3-MA. Finally, MOOs upregulated LPS-downregulated Mfn2 expression in astrocytes. Mfn2 inhibition partly reversed the effects of MOOs on hypertension with depression. Intriguingly, Mfn2 suppression activated PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway during MOOs treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Astrocytes develop neuroinflammation in response to mitochondrial damage during hypertension with depression. MOOs upregulated Mfn2 expression to activate the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway-mediated mitophagy, thereby removing impaired mitochondria in astrocytes. HIGHLIGHTS: 1. MOOs have anti-hypertensive and anti-depressive properties. 2. MOOs inhibit inflammation and injury in astrocytes during hypertension with depression. 3. MOOs induce mitophagy activation in inflammatory astrocytes with mitochondrial damage. 4. MOOs upregulate Mfn2 expression in astrocytes. 5. Mfn2 activates mitophagy to resist mitochondrial damage in astrocytes.

Accumulating evidence suggested that the risk of preterm births (PTBs) following prenatal exposure to air pollution was inconclusive. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between air pollution exposure in the days before delivery and PTB and assess the threshold effect of short-term prenatal exposure to air pollution on PTB. This study collected data including meteorological factors, air pollutants, and information in Birth Certificate System from 9 districts during 2015-2020 in Chongqing, China. Generalized additive models (GAMs) with the distributed lag non-linear models were conducted to assess the acute impact of air pollutants on the daily counts of PTB, after controlling for potential confounding factors. We observed that PM2.5 was related to increased occurrence of PTB on lag 0-3 and lag 10-21 days, with the strongest on the first day (RR = 1.017, 95%CI: 1.000-1.034) and then decreasing. The thresholds of PM2.5 for lag 1-7 and 1-30 days were 100 µg/m3 and 50 µg/m3, respectively. The lag effect of PM10 on PTB was very similar to that of PM2.5. In addition, the lagged and cumulative exposure of SO2 and NO2 was also associated with the increased risk of PTB. The lag relative risk and cumulative relative risk of CO exposure were the strongest, with a maximum RR at lag 0 (RR = 1.044, 95%CI: 1.018, 1.069). Importantly, the exposure-response curve of CO showed that RR increased rapidly when the concentration exceeded 1000 µg/m3. This study indicated significant associations between air pollution and PTB. The relative risk decreases with day lag, while the cumulative effect increases. Thus, pregnant women should understand the risk of air pollution and try to avoid high concentration exposure.

Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G), an active ingredient in anthocyanins, mainly exists in dark cereals. C3G was investigated for its effect on human gastric cancer (GC) cells, together with its molecular mechanism. The CCK-8 assay results showed that C3G had significant antiproliferative effects on GC cells, but it had little effect on normal cells. Western blot and flow cytometry results showed that C3G regulated the reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential and arrested the cell cycle in the G2/M phase through the AKT signaling pathway, causing the cells to undergo apoptosis. Additionally, in MKN-45 cells, C3G markedly raised intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. The wound healing assay and Transwell assay results showed that MKN-45 cell migration was significantly inhibited. Western blot results showed that the expression of E-cadherin protein was upregulated and the expressions of ß-catenin, N-cadherin, and Vimentin were downregulated. Additionally, following N-acetylcysteine treatment, the expression levels of these proteins were reduced. In conclusion, C3G caused MKN-45 cells to undergo apoptosis; arrested the cell cycle in the G2/M phase; hindered cell migration; and activated the MAPK, STAT3, and NF-κB signaling pathways, by inducing an increase in ROS levels. Thus, C3G may be a promising new medication for the treatment of GC.

OBJECTIVE: This investigation aims to determine the antidepressant role of Xingpijieyu formula (XPJYF) mediated via gut microbiota (GM)-brain axis. METHODS: We collected fecal microbiota from patients with depressive disorder (DD) and cultured microbiota in vitro. Some of microbiota were transplanted into germ-free rats with the intragastric administration of XPJYF grain at the dose of 1.533 g/kg/day. The behaviors were studied by forced swimming test, open field test, sucrose preference test, and body weight. Products of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis, neurotransmitter, and serum cytokines were investigated by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), a biomarker of astrocyte, was quantified using immunofluorescence. Microbiota culturing in vitro after XPJYF treatment was analyze by 16 s RNA sequencing technology. We used lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to mimic activated rat primary astrocyte in vitro. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), cytokines, and oxidative stress factors were determined by western blotting, and glycometabolism in astrocyte was investigated by 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) uptake, adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and glucose-1-phosphate (G1P) kits. RESULTS: Microbiota composition during 8 mg/ml of XPJYF (H12-8) for 12 h showed the more consistency. Lactococcus is enriched in DD-derived microbiota composition, and Biffdobacterium and Lactobacillus in H12-8 group. GLUCOSE1PMETAB-PWY and PWY-7328 of which biofunctions were dominantly encoded by Biffdobacterium were the top two of altered pathways. XPJYF improved behaviors and repressed astrocyte activation in depression rats. XPJYF elevated 2-DG uptake, ATP, glucose-1-phosphate, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and inhibited cytokines and oxidative stress in LPS-induced astrocyte. CONCLUSION: XPJYF treatment targets inflammation, activation, and glycometabolim in astrocyte via gut microbiota modulation, thereby improve animal behaviors, HPA axis dysfunction, and neurotransmitter synthesis in depression rats.

BACKGROUND: Currently, depression is diagnosed on the basis of neuropsychological examinations and clinical symptoms, and there is no objective diagnostic method. Several studies have explored the application of microRNAs as potential biomarkers diagnostic for depression. This study aims to determine the diagnostic value of microRNAs for depression. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, the Web of Science, Wanfang Database, SINOMED, China Science and Technology Journal Databaseand China National Knowledge Infrastructure were searched up to 11 January 2022. Stata (version 16.0) and RevMan (version 5.3) software were used for meta-analysis. The pooled sensitivity, pooled specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) were calculated; the summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve was plotted, and the area under the curve (AUC) was calculated. Moreover, meta-regression analyses were performed to determine the source of heterogeneity. Deeks' funnel plot test was used to assess publication bias. RESULTS: In total, 677 patients were enrolled, including 364 patients with depression and 313 healthy controls. Meta-analysis results showed that the pooled sensitivity, specificity, and DOR of microRNAs for the diagnosis of depression were 0.82 [95% confidence intervals(CI): 0.76, 0.87], 0.70 (95% CI: 0.62, 0.77), and 11 (95% CI: 6, 20), respectively, and the AUC of the SROC was 0.84 (95% CI: 0.80, 0.87). CONCLUSIONS: MicroRNAs have high sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing depression and are potential diagnostic biomarkers for depression. REGISTRATION NUMBER: PROSPERO CRD42022303616.

Isoorientin (ISO) is a flavonoid compound containing a luteolin structure, which can induce autophagy in some tumor cells. This study investigated the impact of ISO in gastric cancer AGS cells, and performed an experimental analysis on the main signaling pathways and transduction pathways it regulates. CCK-8 assay results showed that ISO reduced the survival rate of gastric cancer AGS cells, but the toxicity to normal cells was minimal. Hoechst 33342/PI double staining assay results showed that ISO induced apoptosis in gastric cancer AGS cells. Further analysis by flow cytometry and Western blot showed that ISO induced apoptosis via a mitochondria-dependent pathway. In addition, the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in gastric cancer AGS cells also increased with the extension of the ISO treatment time. However, cell apoptosis was inhibited by preconditioning cells with N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Moreover, ISO arrested the cell cycle at the G2/M phase by increasing intracellular ROS levels. Cell migration assay results showed that ISO inhibited cell migration by inhibiting the expression of p-AKT, p-GSK-3ß, and ß-catenin and was also related to the accumulation of ROS. These results suggest that ISO-induced cell apoptosis by ROS-mediated MAPK/STAT3/NF-κB signaling pathways inhibited cell migration by regulating the AKT/GSK-3ß/ß-catenin signaling pathway in gastric cancer AGS cells.

PURPOSE: As the life expectancy of cancer survivors continues to improve, cancer survivors start or resume their life roles as caregivers themselves. We aim to assess the associations between caregiving, cancer diagnosis, and self-reported well-being. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) 2016, 2018, and 2020. Outcomes included self-reported general health, physical health, mental health, depression, physical inactivity, and poor sleep. Weighted multivariable logistic regression models were used to calculate self-reported well-being's adjusted odds ratio (aOR). RESULTS: Comparable to the proportion of caregivers in the general population, approximately 1 out of 5 cancer survivors were caregivers to others. Individuals with dual roles were significantly more likely to report poor general health (aOR = 2.45; 95%CI: 1.46-4.11), physical health (aOR = 2.17; 95%CI: 1.32-3.56), mental health (aOR = 2.47; 95%CI: 1.31-4.64), depression (aOR = 1.64; 95%CI: 1.15-2.41), physical inactivity (aOR = 1.56; 95%CI: 1.05-2.31), and poor sleep (aOR = 1.48; 95%CI: 1.00-2.19) than the general population. Differential impacts of an additional cancer diagnosis on the well-being of caregivers were observed by sex, race, and time since cancer diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Nearly four million cancer survivors in the USA are concomitant caregivers. Individuals with dual roles reported diminished well-being across a variety of measures than caregivers only. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS: Significant unmet health and psychosocial needs exist among individuals with dual roles. Our findings urge for increased awareness of this additional role/responsibility in cancer survivors and provide direct evidence for healthcare providers and policymakers to develop substantial support from the structural level.
